Jhamsikhel in one line: Lalitpur's café strip and the de-facto expat neighbourhood of Patan — walkable nightlife, INGO offices, fibre internet, 10 minutes to central Kathmandu.

Jhamsikhel — "Jhamel" to anyone who lives there — runs north-south along Jhamsikhel Marg in central Lalitpur, with Roadhouse Cafe anchoring the north end and Saturday Cafe the south. In between is a 600-metre walking strip of roasteries, craft pizza, a German bakery, several wine bars, three of the better cocktail rooms in the valley, and a thick cluster of co-working spaces. It's the only neighbourhood outside Thamel where you can credibly walk to dinner and walk home; everywhere else in the valley involves a taxi.

Why INGO and UN staff cluster here. UN House and most of the larger INGO regional offices (Save the Children, Plan International, Helvetas, World Vision) sit within a 1.5-km radius. The neighbourhood's English-language infrastructure — cafés that take card, restaurants with vegetarian and gluten-free menus, two competitive supermarkets — makes it the lowest-friction base for foreign staff who fly in and out of Nepal multiple times a year. The expat density also drives a calendar of events: yoga studios, language schools, film nights, book clubs.

Digital nomad infrastructure. Most blocks here run fibre (NTC or Worldlink, typically 100+ Mbps) and have inverter back-up. Tea House Inn, Roadhouse Cafe, Saturday Cafe, La Soon, and the Civet Coffee branches all tolerate 4-hour laptop sessions and have wall outlets. Work-friendly co-working at Work Around (Sanepa side) and Nepal Communitere on Pulchowk Road. Heritage proximity. Patan Durbar Square is 5 minutes by taxi via Mangal Bazaar — one of the most underrated heritage sites in South Asia and noticeably calmer than Kathmandu Durbar Square. Pulchowk Engineering Campus, Patan Hospital, and the Patan Industrial Estate are all walking distance. Jhamsikhel pairs well with a 2–3 day side trip to Bungmati and Khokana (10 km south) for working-village pottery and woodcarving.

Connectivity to Kathmandu. Central Kathmandu (Thamel, Putalisadak, Durbar Marg) is 10–15 minutes by taxi via the Bagmati bridge at Kupondole — fast enough that many guests living in Jhamsikhel work in Kathmandu offices daily. Tribhuvan International Airport is 20–25 minutes via Ring Road outside peak, 30+ in morning rush.

One thing to know. Jhamsikhel rents skew higher than central Kathmandu — the expat density pulls premium rates. For value, consider Sanepa one block east (same neighbourhood feel, 15–20% cheaper) or Pulchowk slightly north (functional rather than café-strip energy, ~25% cheaper).
