Self-catering in Kathmandu — FAQs
- Is the kitchen actually equipped enough to cook real meals?
- Yes. Induction hob with the right pots and pans, oven, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, full crockery and cutlery, chef knife, chopping boards, basic spices and cooking oil. You can land in the evening and cook breakfast the next morning without a shopping trip. For a serious cooking week, top up at Bhat Bhateni supermarket (4-min taxi).
- Where do I buy groceries?
- Three options in order of convenience: (1) Bhat Bhateni supermarket — the Kathmandu chain, multiple locations, most international brands stocked, 4-min taxi from the apartment. (2) Asan Tole / Indra Chowk — the old market for vegetables, lentils, rice, spices at half the supermarket price. (3) Saleways / Roadhouse — closer supermarket alternatives, smaller selection. The Tiny Living host can recommend specific stores for specific dietary needs on WhatsApp.
- What about water — can I drink the tap water?
- Tap water in Kathmandu is not potable. Every apartment has a UV-filtered drinking-water dispenser in the kitchen, fed from a UV-treated house tank. Safe for direct drinking, refilling water bottles, washing produce, making coffee, and reconstituting infant formula. No need to buy plastic.
- Can I get gluten-free / vegan / kosher ingredients in Kathmandu?
- Yes for most. Gluten-free options (almond / chickpea / rice flour) are available at Bhat Bhateni and at health-food shops in Jhamsikhel (Patan). Vegan is straightforward — Nepali / Newari / Indian cuisine has a deep vegetarian tradition; soy milk, coconut milk, tofu and tempeh are widely available. Kosher is harder; you would self-cater from imported brands at Bhat Bhateni. Halal is straightforward; many Newari and Kathmandu butchers slaughter to halal standard. Tell us your dietary needs on WhatsApp at the time of booking and we can point you at the right stores.
- Do you provide pots, pans and utensils for cooking?
- Yes — non-stick frying pan, induction-compatible saucepan, stockpot, mixing bowls, colander, measuring jug, tongs, spatulas, ladles, can-opener, bottle-opener, corkscrew, peeler, grater. The full set you would have at home.
- How does this compare to hotel breakfast / restaurant meals?
- Cooking your own breakfast costs ~USD 2–3 per person per day. Hotel breakfast buffet in Kathmandu runs USD 12–20 per person. Over a 7-day stay for two, you save USD 140+ on breakfast alone. For lunch and dinner, mixing 50/50 between cooking at home and eating out (local Newari, Tibetan, Indian) gets you the city food experience without the daily restaurant cost. - Is the apartment good for baby food / formula?
- Yes — UV-filtered drinking water dispenser in the kitchen makes formula safe. Cerelac, Heinz baby food, formula, nappies and most international baby brands are at Bhat Bhateni 4 minutes away. High chair and baby cot available on request at no extra fee. See family-friendly apartments.
