Best time by trip type

Pure sightseeing in Kathmandu
October–November (peak weather + festivals). December–February works for lower crowds and clear Himalaya mornings; pack layers. Skip July–August unless you tolerate daily storms.
Trekking (EBC, Annapurna)
October–November first; March–April second. Avoid July–August. Restricted-area treks (Mustang, Dolpo) work in monsoon because they sit in the rain shadow.
Family trip with kids
October and November for the weather and energy. Avoid December–February if young kids will struggle with cold apartments and poor air quality. See our family-friendly apartments setup.
Digital nomad / monthly stay
June–September is the value sweet spot — clean air, low rates, reliable Wi-Fi from the apartment, quiet city. October–November is the peak but premium pricing. Our monthly stays setup has the 15% long-stay discount on 28+ nights.
Visa-extension travel
Any time. The Department of Immigration runs year-round. Avoid the Saturday closures and the Dashain / Tihar holiday windows when the office closes. Detail in our Nepal visa extension 2026 guide.
Business travel / NGO consulting
September–November and March–April for fully functional business hours and clear weather for office-to-office taxi runs. Avoid Dashain (early October) for any appointment-dependent work; many offices close. See business travel apartments.

Best time to visit Kathmandu — FAQs

What is the best month to visit Kathmandu?
October is the single best month — peak weather (cool, clear, dry), the Dashain festival across the country, and the year's best mountain-view mornings combined. November is a close second with cooler nights and the Tihar festival of lights. Both months are also the most expensive and booked out earliest. Book apartments and trekking accommodation 2–3 months ahead.
When is the cheapest time to visit Kathmandu?
July and August during the peak monsoon. Rates on apartments and hotels are 30–50% lower than the October peak; flights are cheaper; the tourist scene is quiet. The trade-off is daily afternoon thunderstorms and no mountain views. For long-stay travellers (digital nomads, 28+ nights), monsoon is the best-value window of the year — and the air quality is at its best of the year because the rain washes dust out.
What is Kathmandu like in monsoon?
Mornings are usually clear; afternoon thunderstorms roll in from 14:00–18:00 with heavy short bursts. The valley is its greenest. Air quality is paradoxically at its yearly best. Domestic flights can cancel for monsoon weather, so allow buffer for any onward trip to Pokhara, Lukla, etc. Full month-by-month detail in our Kathmandu monsoon 2026 apartment playbook.
What is Kathmandu like in winter (Dec–Feb)?
Cold mornings (3–6 °C), mild afternoons (17–22 °C), occasional clear Himalaya days. The main negatives are (1) air quality is at its worst of the year due to atmospheric inversion in Dec–Jan, and (2) heating in older buildings is limited. Pack layers, an N95 mask for high-AQI days, and look for accommodation with inverter back-up. Our Kathmandu winter playbook covers it.
When are the clearest mountain views from Kathmandu?
December–February mornings give the clearest mountain-view chance (roughly 35–40% of mornings show Annapurna / Langtang from the valley). October and November give clear-sky mornings most days but slightly hazier; March–April becomes hazy as construction dust + pre-monsoon haze build. June–September is rare. The best viewpoints from the valley are Chandragiri cable car (25 min south), Nagarkot (90 min east, overnight recommended for sunrise) and Dhulikhel (60 min east).
What about the air quality?
Kathmandu's air quality varies dramatically by month. June–September is at its cleanest (monsoon rain). October–November is good. December–February is the worst — atmospheric inversion traps cold smoggy air at valley level. March–May builds dust before monsoon. Check IQAir before you go out; below AQI 100 is fine, 150+ wear a mask, 200+ stay indoors. For long stays in winter, an indoor air purifier helps; our apartments provide one on request December–February.
What festivals are worth planning around?
Dashain (early October) is the biggest national Hindu festival — 10 days of family gatherings; many businesses close; great for cultural immersion but book apartments by August. Tihar (early November) is the festival of lights — every house lit with oil lamps, marigold garlands, gambling traditions; visually spectacular. Holi (March) for the colour-throwing day; messy and fun. Maha Shivaratri (Feb) at Pashupatinath draws thousands of sadhus; once-in-a-lifetime if your dates align. Indra Jatra (Sept) in Kathmandu Durbar Square; closes parts of the old city for the chariot procession.
Is Kathmandu busy during Dashain?
Yes — and the type of busy is different. Tourists rarely visit during Dashain (locals are with family, many businesses closed) but locals are extremely active for the family gatherings, animal sacrifices and ceremonial blessings. Many restaurants and cafes close 4–10 days. If you visit, you witness an authentic family-centred Hindu festival; if you want functioning city services and crowded sights, skip Dashain. Our Dashain in Kathmandu 2026 guide covers what stays open.
What is the best time to trek from Kathmandu?
October–November is peak (best weather, busy trails). March–April is the secondary peak (rhododendron season, warmer but slightly hazier). December–February is doable but cold; high passes may be closed by snow. May–September is monsoon — most treks are closed or miserable except for rain-shadow regions (Mustang, Dolpo). Detail in our trekking permits Nepal 2026 guide.
When should I avoid Kathmandu?
Two windows are tough: (1) mid-October during peak Dashain if you want functioning city services rather than the festival itself, and (2) July if you cannot tolerate daily afternoon thunderstorms or your trip depends on a domestic flight that monsoon weather can ground. Otherwise, every month works for some kind of visit — pick the trip type to match the month rather than avoiding the month.
