Kathmandu in 3 Days — Apartment-Based Itinerary (2026)

A 3-day Kathmandu itinerary that uses a central Putalisadak apartment as base — saving USD 175+ over a hotel stay, with morning Durbar Square light, Patan + Boudhanath on Day 2, and Bhaktapur or Pashupatinath on Day 3.

Three days is the most common length of stay in Kathmandu — long enough to see the three Durbar Squares, the two stupas, and have one good dinner you'll remember. This is the itinerary that works for a 3-day Kathmandu trip when you're staying in a serviced apartment in Putalisadak, with a kitchen you actually use.

Why a 3-day itinerary based on a central apartment beats the standard hotel itinerary: you save USD 50–60 per day on hotel breakfast and laundry, you walk to the heritage sights instead of taxiing, and you get the early-morning Durbar Square light before the tour buses arrive.

Day 1 — Kathmandu Durbar Square, Asan Tole, Thamel

Morning (07:30–11:30)

Breakfast at the apartment. Filter coffee, eggs from Bhat Bhateni (the supermarket chain), local oranges from the kitchen fruit bowl. USD 2 instead of USD 18 at the hotel buffet.

Walk to Kathmandu Durbar Square (15 minutes south from Putalisadak). The entry ticket for foreigners is NPR 1,000 (~USD 7.50) and is valid for the day — keep it for re-entry. Start at the Kumari Ghar (the Living Goddess's residence) for the courtyard and the third-floor window where the Kumari sometimes appears mid-morning. Continue to Hanuman Dhoka Palace for the architectural detail and the small museum. Photo light is best before 09:30 — the courtyards are in shadow by 10:00 due to the surrounding tall structures.

Wander north from Durbar Square through Asan Tole and Indra Chowk — the old commercial heart of Kathmandu. Spice traders, brass shops, tika powder stalls. This is where to buy cardamom for the kitchen back at the apartment (NPR 500 / 100g).

Lunch (12:00–13:30)

Krishnarpan at Dwarika's Hotel (15-min taxi or 25-min walk) — the gold-standard Newari ceremonial meal, 6–22 courses, USD 35–80 per head. Book ahead; it's a celebration meal. Alternative for under USD 15: Bhojan Griha in Dilli Bazaar, set in a restored Newari mansion.

Afternoon (14:00–17:00)

Walk back to the apartment via Garden of Dreams at Tridevi Marg (NPR 400 entry, ~USD 3). Edwardian-era walled garden, lawn chairs under the colonnade, lemon tarts at the cafe. This is the recovery zone after the morning of heritage sights.

Continue into Thamel for the afternoon. Wander, pick up a North Face knock-off if you're heading to a trek (the real things are imported from Singapore and cost the same as in Singapore), book a guide for tomorrow if you're going to Patan, grab a flat white at Himalayan Java.

Evening (18:00–22:00)

Dinner at the apartment if you want a quiet night. Walk to Asan Tole in the morning for groceries — the bargain is local seasonal vegetables, lentils, rice for a fraction of supermarket prices.

If going out: OR2K for vegetarian Israeli food, Yangling for Tibetan thukpa and momos, Roadhouse Cafe for wood-fired pizza, all in Thamel. Sam's Bar for the post-dinner drink — the trekker tradition. Walk home (15 minutes); don't taxi unless it's raining.

Day 2 — Patan, Pulchowk cafes, Boudhanath stupa

Morning (08:00–12:30)

Start with the same apartment breakfast routine, then taxi to Patan Durbar Square (NPR 500–700, ~USD 5). The foreigner ticket is NPR 1,000 and includes the Patan Museum, which is the single best museum in Nepal — go straight there before the heritage walk to set context.

After the museum (60–90 min), wander Patan Durbar Square itself — Krishna Mandir, the royal complex, the Mul Chowk courtyard. This is the most architecturally consistent Durbar Square of the three.

Lunch (12:30–14:00)

Walk south to Jhamsikhel (10 minutes from Durbar Square). The casual-dining street of Kathmandu. The Old House for Newari thali, Café Soma for sourdough and grain bowls, Roadhouse Patan for pizza, Yala Mandala for the courtyard vibe.

Afternoon (14:00–17:30)

Coffee at Karma Coffee Roasters (Sanepa) or The Coffee Pasal (Pulchowk) — both serve Nepali single-origin from Gulmi and Lalitpur. From there, taxi to Boudhanath stupa (35–45 minutes in afternoon traffic, NPR 800).

Boudhanath is best in the late afternoon — gold light on the stupa, evening kora walkers arriving, Tibetan butter-tea cafes opening for the evening. Walk the kora at least once (clockwise; the inner circuit takes 15 minutes, slower if you stop). Photograph from the second-floor cafes around the stupa for the elevated angle.

Evening (17:30–22:00)

Stay for dinner near Boudhanath. Roadhouse Café Boudha for the rooftop view of the stupa at dusk. Stupa View Restaurant is the literal name and the literal view. Saturday Café for slower vegetarian food.

Taxi back to Putalisadak (15 minutes after evening rush, ~25 in rush).

Day 3 — Bhaktapur or Pashupatinath, depending on energy

You have two strong options for day three. Pick one — both is exhausting.

Option A — Bhaktapur (half-day)

Taxi to Bhaktapur Durbar Square at 08:30 (45 minutes, NPR 1,500). Foreigner entry NPR 1,800 (~USD 13.50, the most expensive of the three). The whole old town is car-free — wander, get lost in the back lanes, the Pottery Square, the wood-carving workshops, the dark courtyards behind the temples.

Eat in BhaktapurKing Curd for the famous Newari yogurt (juju dhau), the lassi at Café Nyatapola, the Newari thali at Bhakta Bhojan.

Back to the apartment by 15:00. Rest. Light dinner at the apartment using whatever you bought in Asan Tole.

Option B — Pashupatinath + Boudhanath (full day)

If you didn't fit Boudhanath into Day 2, do both today. Pashupatinath Temple (40 minutes from Putalisadak, NPR 1,000 entry for foreigners but only to the outer compound — non-Hindus cannot enter the main temple). Best visited 06:00–08:00 for the morning rituals along the Bagmati river ghats.

Walk or taxi 15 minutes to Boudhanath for late afternoon and evening as described in Day 2.

Practical apartment notes for the 3-day stay

  • Buy groceries on Day 0. Asan Tole (vegetables / spices), Bhat Bhateni (everything else, several locations). The apartment kitchen has induction hob, oven, fridge-freezer, dishwasher and basic cooking oil + salt to get you started.
  • Pre-arrange the airport transfer. Tiny Living offers Normal (NPR 1,000) and Luxury car options that the host books on WhatsApp; the driver waits at Arrivals with a name placard, includes 30-min buffer for flight delays.
  • Laundry. Use the apartment's washing machine — no need to pay the hotel USD 8/kg laundry rate. There's a clothesline on the balcony or rooftop.
  • Hot water. On-demand gas geyser; no morning tank-warmup delay regardless of how many guests are showering.
  • Coffee. The kitchen has an Aeropress or French press depending on apartment. Beans from Karma Coffee Roasters in Sanepa are the best souvenir.

The equivalent hotel-based trip (mid-range hotel + 6 hotel breakfasts + 6 lunch/dinner restaurants + more taxis) lands closer to USD 720 for two. The apartment saves you USD 175–250 over three days and gives you a working kitchen, washing machine, and a real desk.

Want to extend to 5 or 7 days?

Add Day 4: Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple) in the morning and the National Museum at Chhauni in the afternoon.

Add Day 5: Day-trip to Nagarkot for the sunrise mountain view (3 hours drive each way), or Dhulikhel for a softer hilltop village stay.

Add Day 6–7: Use the apartment's monthly long-stay discount (kicks in at 28+ nights) only if you're staying through. For 5–14 nights the regular nightly rate applies. Take a day off for laundry, a long lunch at Yala Mandala, and the Patan secondary museums you skipped on Day 2.
