Best Time to Visit Kathmandu: Month-by-Month Weather, Crowds & Prices
A month-by-month breakdown of Kathmandu weather, crowds and room prices — so you can pick the season that fits your trip.
There is no single "best" time to visit Kathmandu — there's the best time for your trip. Trekkers, sightseers, digital nomads and budget travellers each want a different month. Here's the honest month-by-month picture: weather, crowds and what you'll pay for a room.
The two peak seasons: October–November and March–April
Autumn (October–November) is the postcard version of Nepal: clear skies, mountain views, warm days, cool nights, and the big festivals of Dashain and Tihar. It's also the busiest and priciest window — book weeks ahead. Spring (March–April) is the second peak: rhododendrons in bloom, stable weather, and the main trekking season alongside autumn.
If you want guaranteed blue skies and don't mind crowds or higher rates, these are your months.
The shoulder months: February, May, September
These are the sweet spots for value. February is crisp and clear but cold at night. May is warm and hazier as the pre-monsoon heat builds. September is the fresh, green tail of the monsoon — occasional showers, but the valley is at its most lush and rooms are cheaper before the October rush.
Monsoon: June–August
Rain mostly falls in short afternoon bursts, not all-day downpours, so the mornings are often fine. The valley is green, the crowds thin, and prices drop. The trade-off is haze (few mountain views) and the odd flight delay. If you're apartment-based and flexible, it's an underrated time — see our monsoon apartment playbook.
Winter: December–January
Kathmandu doesn't get snow, but nights are genuinely cold and many rooms are poorly heated. Days are mild and clear. It's the quietest, cheapest season — great for a slow, low-cost stay if you pack warm layers and pick a place with good bedding and heating. Our winter apartment playbook covers exactly what to look for.
Quick reference
- Best mountain views: October, November, March
- Best value: September, February, monsoon
- Fewest crowds: June–August, December–January
- Festivals: Dashain & Tihar (Oct/Nov), Holi (March)
Whatever month you choose, Kathmandu rewards a flexible plan more than a rigid one. If mountain views top your list, come in autumn; if budget and quiet matter more, the shoulder and off-seasons are quietly wonderful.
