Where to find the best ones
Around Boudhanath Stupa — the classic. A ring of rooftop cafés looks straight down onto the great white dome and its watching eyes. Grab a Tibetan tea or coffee, and time it for late afternoon when the light softens and monks and pilgrims circle below.
Thamel — dozens of rooftop restaurants and bars sit above the shopping chaos. Handy for a sundowner and a break from the crowds; quality varies, so pick one with a genuine view rather than just height.
Patan (Jhamsikhel & Durbar Square) — the most stylish rooftops, overlooking either the café district or the medieval square and its temples. Excellent coffee and food to match the view.
