Best Day Trips from Kathmandu: Nagarkot, Bhaktapur, Chandragiri & More

Six of the best day trips from Kathmandu — mountain sunrises, medieval cities and cable cars — with how to get there and how long to allow.

One of the quiet joys of basing yourself in Kathmandu is how much sits within a couple of hours of the city. When you're settled in an apartment with a kitchen and your own key, day trips become effortless — leave in the morning, come home to your own space at night. Here are six of the best.

1. Bhaktapur (45 min)

The best-preserved of the valley's three medieval royal cities. Car-free lanes, brick temples, wood-carving workshops and the famous juju dhau (king curd). Allow a half to full day. It's an easy taxi ride, and far calmer than Kathmandu's own Durbar Square.

2. Nagarkot (1.5 hrs)

The classic Himalayan sunrise viewpoint on the valley rim, ~2,100 m up. Many visitors stay overnight to catch dawn, but a late-afternoon trip for sunset works too. On a clear autumn or winter morning you can see a long stretch of the Himalaya, sometimes as far as Everest.

3. Chandragiri Hills (1 hr + cable car)

A cable car whisks you to a 2,550 m ridge with a temple, restaurants and panoramic mountain views — no hiking required. Great for families and anyone who wants the view without the trek. Go on a clear morning before cloud builds.

4. Patan / Lalitpur (20 min)

Barely a "trip" — it's just across the river — but Patan's Durbar Square, museum and courtyards deserve their own day. The Jhamsikhel and Sanepa cafés nearby make it an easy lunch stop.

5. Namobuddha & Dhulikhel (1.5–2 hrs)

Dhulikhel is a hill town with mountain views and old Newari architecture; nearby Namobuddha is one of Buddhism's most sacred sites, with a beautiful monastery and a gentle ridge walk between the two. A lovely, less-touristed full day.

6. Shivapuri National Park (1 hr)

For a nature day without leaving the valley: forest trails, birdlife and viewpoints in the hills on Kathmandu's northern edge. Budhanilkantha temple sits at the base.

Getting around

For a single destination, a return taxi arranged for the day is simplest — agree the price and waiting time up front. For Nagarkot or Dhulikhel, a private car is worth it for the flexibility. Reliable mobile data helps for maps and calling drivers — see our Nepal SIM card guide.

Base yourself centrally, keep a couple of these up your sleeve for clear-weather mornings, and you'll see a side of the valley most hotel-bound visitors miss.
